Guinness to give verdict on world's oldest person

Friends and family of Cruz Hernandez, believed to be the oldest person in the world, gathered together yesterday to celebrate her 128th birthday. The festivities were attended by more than 200 people some of whom came dressed as figures from Salvadoran mythology. According to the National Birth Registry in El Salvador, Hernandez was born on May 3rd 1878. However, although officials sent her documents and records to the Guinness World Records organisation last year, they are still waiting to hear whether or not her case will be accepted and a formal entry made to the records book, declaring Hernandez the world’s oldest person. That position is currently held by the Ecuadorian, Maria Esther de Capovilla who celebrated her 116th birthday on September 14th 2005.
