California in an Age of Abundance, 1950-1963: An Interview With Kevin Starr
University of Southern California Professor Kevin Starr has just released the eighth book in his “Americans and the California Dream” series. The latest entry takes on the pivotal period when California, emerging from World War 2, became the quintessential symbol of the American Dream. In this detailed tapestry Starr chronicles California’s economy, infrastructure, culture, along with the professors, politicians and benefactors who shaped the state. Along the way he introduces the elements in contrast to all this; the poets, writers and protestors who would soon transform the face of California along with the larger Untied States as the relative calm of the 50s and early 60s gave way to the volatility of the mid-1960s.
