Aren't those robots led by human remote controls? I thought that there were humans moving them like miniature mobile-cars or -ships.

I think those wouldn't be as useful as a burglar hunting robot had to be ;)

The story to which Aeon links describes the device as a "large black ball." But the "Rover" device from the Prisoner series was a large white ball. Hence Aeon's alarm is clearly unjustified.

Did you ever watch the robot combat show on Comedy Central? Some of those machines could put very bloody end to a burgler's career.
