The fact checkers for the Emmys are clearly not earning their pay. Had they been doing their job, they might have thought twice before allowing “60 Minutes” to get an Emmy for the report on the “The Murder of Emmett Till” under the category of best “continuing story in a newsmagazine.” As we pointed out last year, this segment, hosted by Ed Bradley, contained egregious factual errors and spectacularly slanted reporting.

Most notably, “60 Minutes” ignored exculpatory evidence that contradicted the tidy open and shut case it tried to present against a black man accused of participation in the crime. Were the producers of the Emmys aware of these problems before they gave this award? Did they care? Apparently not.
