"Fables of the Reconstruction" ...

Bloggers ranging from Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit to Fishkite on the right and Scott McLemee on the left are calling our attention to this article,"Fables of the Reconstruction" by Jason Vest in the Village Voice which tells a grim tale about the effort at reconstruction in Iraq. Vest quotes at length from what he says is an internal memorandum of the Coalition Provisional Authority in early March 2004. The article makes very compelling reading. I've contacted people at the Village Voice to urge them to make the original document itself available to readers on the net.
Update: So let it be said; so let it be done. Thanks to Glenn Reynolds for the pointer. And, in case you missed it, Niall Ferguson, one of "the world's 100 most influential people" according to Time, thinks we should keep on doing what we've been doing, only tougher.

And this is raw data. The memo is considerably more interesting reading than the article, to my historian's eye. Actually, it's better writing, too.

We are in such trouble. And this was written a month ago.
