Waugh & Orwell

  • Troy Patterson,"Brideshead Revisited Revisited," Slate, 25 July, argues that Evelyn Waugh is"the greatest comic novelist of the last 100 years," but that his Brideshead Revisited is"a misfit of a book, much loved, and often loved in the wrong way, as the vomitous stupidity of Miramax's new film adaptation attests."
  • Eric Ormsby,"Against the Day," NY Sun, 30 July, reviews David Lebedoff's The Same Man: George Orwell & Evelyn Waugh in Love and War. It seems unlikely.
  • The Orwell Prize site announces that it will launch publication of George Orwell's diaries on-line today.* Like the highly successful The Diary of Samuel Pepys, the Orwell diaries are to appear in daily blog format. In the meantime, Paul K. Lyons,"When DID Orwell start a diary?" The Diary Junction Blog, 29 July, has some questions about the project.
*There's some confusion as to the launch, because it's said to be in honor of the"70th anniversary" which the site says isn't until August 9. Hat tip.
