Cowen talk

President Cowen spoke yesterday at UT about the return to Tulane, the rebuiling of New Orleans and the plan for the Spring Semester. He hopes to mobilize the student body to volunteer and be a part of the rebuilding of New Orleans. He believes there are no environmental concerns about living in the campus area - he said he's been drinking the water for a couple of weeks. No faculty have resigned and there haven't been that many student withdrawls. But there was a Q&A session and two students who were really mad about having to pay tuition this semester started yelling.
Cowen also said that because no public schools will be open in the Spring, Tulane will be operating a school for children of staff, faculty and students. He is also heading the comission to rebuild New Orleans school district.
I asked about Government Documents/Microforms. Cowen said the damaged books and microfiche have been frozen until the restoration process can begin.
Most everything he said is already on the website. I look forward to seeing everyone in January!

Apartment Available on Fern St.

My parents, George and Molly Keenan, have a large, upper, 2 bedroom apartment for rent at 1317 Fern St. They are nice folks (they live downstairs) and are listing it less than they did before the storm hit. It is about 6 or 7 blocks from the Newcomb part of campus.

to professor Bruce raeburn from brazil or anyone that knows where he is

Dear Professor

I am an editor for Bravo Magazine (www.bravonline.com.br), a brazilian monthly nationwide culture magazine (circulation around 500.000 copies every month). We are doing a cover article on the great importance of New Orleans for the american culture and all the questions that arouse now with the recent tragedy. Therefore I would like to do a phone or e-mail interview with you regarding the town as the roots of jazz and also about some other aspects of american culture that are rooted in New Orleans and what to expect for the future. Many thanks for your help in advance. Best wishes,

Carlos Haag

Doctoral Students: HELP!

I can't get an answer to this: If Ph.D students with fellowships and tuition scholarships enroll for full-time study at other universities for fall term, how will Tulane handle the issue of tuition? I am enrolled now at University of South Carolina - they have given NO tuition waiver (3 weeks ago they gave me a different impression) and want me to sign a promissory note for thousands of dollars of fall tuition. Since I have a tuition scholarship at Tulane, I can't assume that Tulane will pay this when it comes due. Then I am left with a debt for USC tuition. HELP. Other doctoral students with tuition scholarships: What do you know about this?
Are any of you enrolled elsewhere for fall?

New Orleans Archives

For those who have asked recently: Most New Orleans Archives are in relatively good shape. Go to the special website of the Society of Southwest Archivists: www.ssacares.org for excellent, current information, including photos. The only major archive I could not find information on is that of the Archdiocese, but I may not have been looking in the right places.

Streep's literary reading

The piece that Meryl Streep read was an ode to New Orleans by Lafcadio Hearn, English writer who came to live in and love New Orleans. You may listen to a Real Player version of Streep's beautiful reading at NPR.org. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4837922

Donna - LAS History

Hi Everyone, In GA with family and dogs. We left New Orleans with grandson amd extended family members (4 car caravan) sunday night around 5:00pm. Made it to GA 15 hours later. I was so proud of my Saturn. We are scattered but well and safe. Everyone here has just been so wonderful, patient, understanding, and so so helpful. It's overwhelming!

I spoke with another Tulane employee about a week ago and she said that Pam Smith is in Laffyette (spelling)...and doing fine. Some of her New Orleans family are in Houston and doing well. Hopefully Hurrican Rita will behave herself.

I am in contact with Professor Boyden at least once a week (when ever we can get a good connection.)

I miss you all very much and can't wait to return to Tulane and the best department on campus.

C. U. all real soon.
DCD

P.S.Having trouble retrieving email...

Historical Piece read about New Orleans by Merl Streep at the Higher Ground Concert on Sept l7

I very much want to read the author, whose name has escaped me, and transcripts are not available to the Higher Ground concert but the way the author wrote about new orleans is just how I feel about it, although I am a native San Francisacan and I have only been to New Orleans twice. If you could e-mail me back where I could find the writings of this man, I would be very grateful. Thank you, Karen Clark Maybe professor Brinkley would know.

Douglas Brinkley Contact Information

I am a journalist doing an article on Hunter S. Thompson and the legacy of grassroot writers. I am trying to find Mr. Brinkley's e-mail, hoping to ask him a few questions about Dr. Thompson's take on university writing programs and other related issues regarding his career sans acadamia and its laurels.

Please, can anyone help?
