More Noted Things

Keith Bradshear, "China's ‘Mona Lisa' Makes a Rare Appearance in Hong Kong," NYT, 2 July, reviews the two-part exhibit, "The Pride of China." It focuses, however, on this rare public view of the exhibit's most famous work, Zhang Zeduan's 12th century scroll painting, "Along the River During the Qingming Festival."

John Gravois, "Knights of the Faculty Lounge," CHE, 6 July, reports on the recent International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University. Medievalists know it as ‘Kalamazoo' or ‘the Zoo'. Don't miss the audio report, where In the Middle's J. J. Cohen puts in an appearance. Why do medievalists have all the fun? Anybody up to doing "The Cotton-Eyed Joe" at the next AHA convention? I'm in!

Jon Meacham, "Before the Cannon Fired," Washington Post, 1 July, reviews William Freehling's The Road to Disunion, Volume II: Secessionists Triumphant, 1854-1861.

If you haven't seen it, have a look at the presentation by Blaise Aguera y Arcas, a demonstration of Seadragon, new visual technology. It's quite extraordinary. Hat tip.
