Barry Rubin has just brought to my attention that the next round of BBC World's Doha Debates will not take place in Doha but in Oxford:
The Doha Debates at the Oxford UnionThe Doha Debates have been invited to hold an event at the Oxford Union - the world famous debating society of Oxford University - on the 1st of May.
The motion to be debated will be: This House believes the pro-Israeli lobby has successfully stifled Western debate about Israel's actions.
A group of students from Qatar will travel with the Doha Debates team to Oxford University to participate as audience members.
This will be the first Doha Debate to be held outside Qatar.
These Doha debates are seen throughout the world. I have watched quite a number of them while in India. Their anti-Western, anti-Democratic bent was quite stunning. The script could have been written in Saudi Arabia if not for the audience that in addition to the usual mouth pieces included some truly courageous young people who refused to except that veiling is best for women or democracy is anti-Muslim. I am sure such rabble rousers will not be included amongst those getting a free junket to Oxford.
The truth is that just as Anti-Americanism is endemic to Britain, so is anti-Semitism. Moreover, the British establishment has never forgiven Israel for succeeding. Feelings superior to the "poor Palestinians" and smirking about Arab Sheiks are much more gratifying.
