William Steiner: Between the Lies: Rise of the media-military-industrial complex (London: Southern Universities Press).
I liked this book because it offers an alternative discourse to that usually found in orthodox, modern military history books.

Between the Lies, through its historical analysis of media manipulation, shows how public legitimacy is achieved for mass destruction in time of war. It takes a hard look at the covert military-political manipulation of the British and American mass communication industries during World War II, the Cold War, and beyond.

This book convinced me that the false pre-war claims about Iraqi "weapons of mass destruction" seem almost benign when compared with the grim distortions of reality that underpinned most of the West's major military operations of the 20th Century, while official propaganda and historical records sought to claim otherwise.
