Encyclopedia Britannica, 1911 Edition is wrong (#5309)
by Rick on November 29, 2002 at 7:06 AM
Encyclopedia Britannica, 1911 Edition has it got all wrong.

1. Who the hell is Mahomet ? Do they mean Mohammed
2. Islam does not force anyone to become Muslims so this statment "Conquered peoples who will neither embrace Islam nor pay a poll-tax (jizya) are to be put to the sword" would not be an Islamic act. Any 'leader' who did this would not be representing Islam but his own interest (and there have been some around in Muslim history)
3. Mahommedans - This word is incorrect. Muslims do not follow Mohammed but the Quran.
4. I shall be making a point of not buying anything done by Encyclopedia Britannica as it seems to be badly misinformed. I shall make a point of contacting national and international libraries and Education centres to avoid buying/having such incorrect litertaure in their reference section.
Thanks.
