Asian is lying about Islam and Mohammad’s rise to power in Medina. I won’t go into the details. I just want to point out that young Muslims will see through the lies and hypocrisy. The big question is how many will ignore core parts of the religion that are at odds with individual liberty? Will it be enough for substantial and lasting change?
Well, it is the same with Christianity. If you look at the march of NeoCon religious hardliners, you will see the same problem: Faith or Individual Liberty. I don't think we really got this question right anyway. So, why should the Muslims be any better or different?
I think it is arrogance to say that we have beaten all contra-liberty issues out of Christian theology...
Jason, I honestly don't have enough information about Aslan to know if he's actually lying about this. Certainly you are right: There is a vastly different view of both Islam and Mohammad among the fundamentalists of various stripes (as Aslan seems to admit), and I too wonder if/how Aslan's alternative will gain currency with those particular groups---who are also among those groups constituting terrorist cells.
The encouraging sign is that these kinds of discussions are moving forward.
