Civil War Battlefield Funding Taking Shape
HARRISONBURG - Funding to preserve 178 acres of the Civil War battlefield at Port Republic is nearly in hand, according to a letter from the national Civil War Preservation Trust.
In a letter received last week, the trust said it is joining forces with the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation headquartered at New Market to buy the development rights on the land.
Spokeswomen for the trust and foundation both said Tuesday they would not comment on what property the money is meant to purchase until the deal was completed.
Funding Plan
Of the total $420,000 cost, the foundation is putting in $140,000 and the state is contributing another $140,000.
The Civil War Preservation Trust has committed $42,000 and applied for an additional federal grant of $98,000, which would complete the deal, according to its letter.
"Good economy ... bad economy ... any economy ... this was a great opportunity to save significant land at a vitally important battlefield," said Jim Lighthizer, the trust's president, in a statement released Sept. 2.
The Port Republic Battlefield is located east of the village of the same name.
On June 9, 1862, Confederate Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson defeated federals in an engagement that capped his famous Shenandoah Valley military campaign.
