Drew Gilpin Faust: Role model for women's studies majors
A recent role model for women's-studies students, according to [Nikki Ayanna Stewart, a Ph.D. candidate in women's studies at the University of Maryland at College Park], is Drew Gilpin Faust, the first female president of Harvard University. Ms. Faust is also a former director of the women's-studies program at the University of Pennsylvania.
In a separate article, though, Caryn McTighe Musil, senior vice president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, says that while Ms. Faust's recent appointment at Harvard was "historic and symbolically important, it should not mask the reality of life for women in higher education." Women in academe, Ms. Musil writes, "continue to advance more slowly up faculty ranks and earn less salary than their male colleagues."
"Furthermore," Ms. Musil says, "despite high-profile appointees such as Faust, women are still disproportionately represented in lower ranks and at less prestigious institutions."
