Here Come the Heavyweights

Dale Light of Light Seeking Light calls my attention to the fact that Walter Laqueur is now blogging at The Free West. The blog was launched by the Dutch novelist, Leon de Winter, and is now carried on Die Welt's site. Among senior historians, Laqueur joins Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., who blogs now at The Huffington Post. Tribbles to the contrary notwithstanding, the day cometh and now almost is, when you'll face an interview committee that says: we like you, your credentials hold great promise of a brilliant career, but where's your website and your blog?

Oscar, We're talking about expectations here. The expectation of young historians that they will produce work in print does not preclude the possibility of their actually, you know, talking to people. I should think that an on-line presence wouldn't preclude their talking with other people.

I realize your tongue was well within cheek, but I would hate to see the day that we had to converse in such a form. Some people are born to talk quietly in person and not click their words out online.

I would like that...a day when graduate students don't cringe with a touch of fear when I invite them to join Frog in a Well and they wonder if they are risking their careers by contributing to productive historical discussions in the blogging world.
