NCH WASHINGTON UPDATE (Vol. 12, #23; 16 May 2006) // ACTION ALERT!

Dear Humanities Advocates and
Readers of the NCH WASHINGTON UPDATE:

The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to take up consideration of the FY2007 Interior Appropriations bill on Thursday, May 18. The Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, which marked up the bill on 4 May, recommended level funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) at $142 million, and this remained in the bill through the full committee mark-up. The bill is now ready to be advanced to the House floor for action. If we are to realize a budget increase for the NEH, we need your help!

The National Humanities Alliance reports that when the bill comes to the House floor, an amendment will be introduced by the leadership of the Congressional Humanities Caucus and the Congressional Arts Caucus to increase funding for the NEH and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) by $10 million to $15 million, evenly divided between the two endowments. This would mean an increase for the NEH of $5 million to $7.5
million! These funds will go a long way to help support history and
humanities activities sponsored by the NEH. We strongly encourage you to
send a message to your member of Congress TODAY urging them to vote in favor of this amendment.

The National Humanities Alliance has provided a beginning text and talking points for you to amplify at <http://www.humanitiesadvocacy.org/action_ctr.html>;. Please e-mail or fax your Representative, adding information about your own programs and the importance of humanities funding to the citizens of your member's district. It will only take a few minutes!

Many thanks for your help in this important effort to increase funding for history and the humanities!

SAMPLE MESSAGE:

Dear Representative __________:

I am writing to ask you to support an increase for the National Endowment for the Humanities when the House votes on the FY2007 Interior Appropriations bill, now scheduled for consideration on May 18. I hope at that time you will vote in favor of an expected amendment to support increased funding for the NEH and the NEA. As you know, a government that supports and funds the humanities fosters a better understanding of our history, culture and the world we live in. This enables a well-prepared citizenry to make informed decisions when faced with social, political, economic and technological challenges.

Sincerely,
your name
