Auburn
Some years ago, when I visited Auburn University on a job interview, I got the distinct impression that the place was a football team to which classes were occasionally offered. It was still in recovery from the revelation that its star running back, James Brooks, was illiterate. Pete Thamel,"Top Grades and No Class Time for Auburn Players," NYTimes, 14 July, and Bill Sanders,"Auburn Investigates Allegations," AJC, 14 July, consider the most recent charges that Auburn ill-serves its athletes by giving them premium grades for little academic work.
