Things Noted Here and There

The Carnival of Bad History #8 is up over at Liberty & Power. David Beito has plenty of bad history in store for you!

Ian Hodder,"This Old House," Natural History Magazine, June, introduces us to Çatalhöyük, a Neolithic site in Turkey. There is more, including a blog, at the site's site. Thanks to Arts & Letters Daily for the tip.

Elesha Coffman,"Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory," Christianity Today, August, reviews Mark Noll's The Civil War as a Theological Crisis and Harry Stout's Upon the Altar of the Nation: A Moral History of the Civil War.

Dave Itzek,"Alice's Alias," NY Times, 20 August, reviews Julie Phillips, James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon, a sci-fi writer who led a fascinating life.

Alan Brinkley,"The Making of a War President," NY Times, 20 August, reviews Randall B. Woods' LBJ: Architect of American Ambition.

Finally, when a history blogger declares he's going on hiatus, do you know what he does? He takes you on a trip back in time and to another place:

If you ever plan to motor west
Travel my way, the highway that's the best.
Get your kicks on Route 96!

I should make clear that it's in the current issue.

Thanks for the pointer. I'm a great fan of hers, and it's always interesting to learn more about her as a person as well. You may want to know that Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine published a selection of the letters she exchanged with Ursula Le Guin in the 1970s, first using her pseudonym, and then openly. It was fascinating to watch these two highly literate, deeply thoughtful people wrestle with questions of gender, self, and authenticity, all in a casual, upfront, and very readable way.
