Things More Noted Still
There are several responses to Christopher Phelps,"Herbert Aptheker: The Contradictions of History," CHE, 6 October, of interest at"Herbert Aptheker in Public Life and at Home," CHE, 10 November.
In"Luck and Unluck" at Positive Liberty, Jason Kuzniki takes me to the woodshed for being soft on providential history. I don't endorse either Hirsh's or Kuzniki's particular historical judgments, but I think Jason's right that Hirsh's piece is low-grade whiggery. Still, I'm usually fairly clear about not confusing fortuna with providence.
David Rollow,"Modernism vs. Morality," Boston Globe, 5 November, reviews Michael Kammen, Visual Shock: A History of Art Controversies in American Culture. Thanks to Arts & Letters Daily for the tip.
