Thursday Notes

Last call for nominations for History Carnival on 15 December and an early modern edition of Carnivalesque this weekend.

The New York Times' Sam Tanenhaus takes good questions and gives good answers at"Talk to the Newsroom: Book Review Editor Sam Tanenhaus," NYT, 11 December.

Eugene Volokh,"‘Plagiarism' and ‘Atonement'," The Volokh Conspiracy, 13 December, reproduces his Wall Street Journal op-ed, in which Volokh sorts through issues of plagiarism and violation of copyright in ways that help us understand those issues in other cases.

News is breaking fast on the charges of rape against 3 members of Duke University's lacrosse team. North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones is supporting the call by our colleague, KC Johnson, for a federal inquiry into whether the civil rights of the 3 men accused have been violated. Defense attorneys have filed objections to the prosecution's handling of DNA test results many months ago that showed positive for as many as five men, but for no member of Duke's lacrosse team. KC left Brooklyn last night for Durham, NC. There he will be live-blogging at Durham-in-Wonderland during a hearing in the case on Friday.
