Things Noted Here and There
Sheryl Longin,"History Lessons," Pajamas Media, 19 August. Novelist and screenwriter Longin claims that history as taught, at least on the primary and secondary levels, doesn't do what it should. There are some fairly simple-minded ideas at work here -- such as history as a work of progress -- but popular criticism of history teaching ought never be ignored. Hat tip.
Jakob Norberg,"No Coffee," Eurozine, 8 August, looks at discussions by Jürgen Habermas, Carl Schmitt, and Alexander Kluge of the complex relationship between the bourgeoisie and their coffee. Hat tip.
Finally, I apologize to those who expected to find Professor Gregory Clark's response to his critics here this morning (scroll down). He's been pre-occupied with a grant application and taking a daughter off to college, but promises to have a response for us asap.
