Nazis Do "The Lambeth Walk"
Any time you're Lambeth way,
Any evening, any day,
You'll find us all
Doin' the Lambeth Walk. Oi!
Every little Lambeth gal,
With her little Lambeth pal,
You'll find 'em all
Doin' the Lambeth Walk. Oi!
In October 1938, the London Times reported that"While dictators rage and statesmen talk, all Europe dances - to The Lambeth Walk." Early in 1939, an SA Mann gave a speech on the"revolution of private life" as the National Socialist Party's next big task. As an example, he cited the Lambeth Walk as a piece of"Jewish mischief and animalistic hopping." Three years later, Charles A. Ridley of the British Ministry of Information made a short propaganda film, Lambeth Walk - Nazi Style. He edited existing footage of Hitler and German soldiers (from Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will) to make it look as if they were marching and dancing to"The Lambeth Walk." The film was distributed uncredited to newsreel companies, which supplied their own narration. One report says that it so enraged Josef Goebbels that he ran from the screening room kicking chairs and screaming profanities.
