Is Freud still relevant?

Is Freud still relevant a century after laying out the course of psychoanalysis? This fall, in celebration of the centennial of the five landmark lectures Sigmund Freud presented at Clark University in 1909, some of the world’s leading scientists will gather to explore the workings of the mind and new developments in the study of brain and genetics, the psychological approach, and how thought, motivation and emotion play a role in behavior.

The academic conference, from Oct. 3 to 5, is the centerpiece of Clark’s centennial commemoration, “Great Minds Come to Clark – Freud Revisited.” Also planned during the 2009-2010 academic year are arts events, cultural collaborations with the city of Worcester, and festival-style campus and student-organized activities.

The 1909 conference, organized by President G. Stanley Hall, attracted many pioneering minds of the time – in physics, anthropology, psychology and other disciplines. Franz Boas, Carl Jung, Sandor Ferenczi, and A.A. Michelson are among those who shared the spotlight with Dr. Freud 100 years ago.
