Senate Mourns Passing of Ambrose

The Senate agreed to a resolution (S. Res. 342) recognizing the contributions of historian Stephen Ambrose who died last week. Introduced by Mary Landreu (D-LA) the tribute mourns the death of Ambrose, expresses the Senate's condolences to his family, and salutes the"excellence of Stephen Ambrose at capturing the greatness of the American spirit in words."

On the floor of the Senate, several members spoke eloquently of Ambrose and his writings. Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) for example, who considered himself a personal friend of Ambrose stated,"He has left a mark for historians to envy because he was a popular historian. I challenge anyone to read one of his books and not want to read the next one written by Steve Ambrose."
