‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ Gets Thorough Inspection but Mystery Still Surrounds Subject

Prying eyes are hoping to catch a revealing look at one of art’s most enigmatic subjects.

Even today, more than 350 years after Johannes Vermeer painted “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” researchers are still learning fascinating, new details regarding the masterpiece.

While art historians have been able to employ state-of-the-art imaging techniques to establish a more precise analysis of the artwork — often referred to as the "Dutch ‘Mona Lisa’” — its subject remains a mystery.

They also confirmed that the girl has eyelashes and was painted in front of a faded green curtain, reported The Associated Press.

“Who was the girl?” asked Martine Gosselink, the director of The Hague’s Mauritshuis museum which houses the painting on Tuesday. “Spoiler alert: No, sadly we didn’t find out who this young lady was and if she ever really existed. But we did get a little closer to her.”
